CERT-FR flags Windows Patch Tuesday flaws

high vulnerability

Free public brief. The indicators, the detections with Splunk SPL already written (plus Elastic and KQL where they apply), and a Slack alert the next time this touches a vendor you run are in the app — free account, no card.

CERT-FR's October 2026 Windows advisory lists numerous vulnerabilities, including CVE-2026-96951 which Microsoft confirms is actively exploited.

CERT-FR published a consolidated advisory covering multiple vulnerabilities across the Microsoft Windows ecosystem, part of the October 13, 2026 Patch Tuesday cycle. Affected products span nearly the entire supported Windows family: Windows 10 (multiple versions, 32-bit/x64/ARM64), Windows 11 (23H2 through 26H2), Windows Server 2012 through 2025, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, Windows Defender, Windows Security App, Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL2), and Windows Sysinternals Process Monitor. The vulnerabilities collectively allow remote code execution, privilege escalation, remote denial of service, data integrity and confidentiality compromise, and security feature bypass.

Microsoft has confirmed that CVE-2026-96951 is being actively exploited in the wild, making it the priority patch target among the large batch disclosed. The advisory itself does not provide technical details of the exploitation, individual CVE descriptions, or affected-component breakdowns beyond pointing to MSRC's own per-CVE bulletin pages. Given the scale (well over 100 CVE identifiers referenced) and the breadth of affected Windows versions and editions, this represents a standard monthly Microsoft security update rollup as redistributed by the French national CERT.

Defenders should prioritize patching systems vulnerable to CVE-2026-96951 given its confirmed in-the-wild exploitation, then apply the full cumulative update set across all affected Windows client, server, and WSL2 deployments per Microsoft's official guidance. Organizations should verify patch levels against the specific build numbers listed (e.g., Windows 11 24H2 before 10.0.26100.9711, Windows Server 2025 before 10.0.26100.33650) and ensure Defender/Security App components are updated in parallel.

What this brief leaves out

This page is the free tier: the write-up, the severity, the names. In the app the same report carries its extracted indicators, its detections (Splunk SPL already written, plus Elastic and Microsoft KQL where they apply), the actors and CVEs it names as live profiles, and the vendor research on the same campaign — the primary source the news paraphrased, cited and read directly.

It sits in a corpus of 13,853 reports from 146 sources, 616 of them written in the last seven days, and it grows through the day.

A new account starts with three days of all of it, no card, then keeps the government and CERT reporting free. Name the vendors you run and Slack hears about the reports that touch them — about forty a week that are yours, not the four hundred that are not.
