The scammers are highly professional, targeting tech-savvy individuals aged 30-60 through various channels including social media, dating websites, and professional networking platforms. They create realistic-looking investment platforms displaying false account balances and profits to build trust. According to IC3, victims reported $3.9 billion in cryptocurrency investment fraud losses in 2023 alone, with approximately 3,200 complaints filed monthly. The FBI is pursuing a multi-pronged approach including victim notification, disruption of criminal infrastructure, and sharing threat intelligence with private sector partners to combat these organized crime operations.
