UmBra Group Lists Helwan University Breach

high threat education

Free public brief. The indicators, the detections with Splunk SPL already written (plus Elastic and KQL where they apply), and a Slack alert the next time this touches a vendor you run are in the app — free account, no card.

Ransomware group UmBra claims a breach of Egypt's Helwan University, listing compromised employee and user credentials.

Ransomware.live has indexed a victim listing from the ransomware/extortion group known as UmBra naming Helwan University (HITU), an Egyptian public university, as a target. The listing reports a significant scale of compromise: 165 compromised employees, 18,219 compromised users, and 5,659 third-party employee credentials exposed, alongside 133 external attack surface items identified for the victim's domain. No details are provided on the initial access vector, ransomware payload, encryption activity, or ransom demand, and no file hashes, C2 infrastructure, or other technical IOCs are included in this leak-site record.

This entry appears to be a leak-site/victim-tracking notification rather than a technical writeup, so defenders at Helwan University or affiliated institutions should treat this as a confirmed claim of data exposure pending further verification, and review credential exposure for staff and students, enforce password resets where reuse is suspected, and monitor for use of leaked credentials in follow-on account-takeover or phishing attempts. Organizations in the education sector, particularly those with large user populations and third-party integrations, should use this as a prompt to review external attack surface and credential hygiene practices, especially given the large number of third-party employee credentials reportedly implicated.

What this brief leaves out

This page is the free tier: the write-up, the severity, the names. In the app the same report carries its extracted indicators, its detections (Splunk SPL already written, plus Elastic and Microsoft KQL where they apply), the actors and CVEs it names as live profiles, and the vendor research on the same campaign — the primary source the news paraphrased, cited and read directly.

It sits in a corpus of 13,854 reports from 146 sources, 616 of them written in the last seven days, and it grows through the day.

A new account starts with three days of all of it, no card, then keeps the government and CERT reporting free. Name the vendors you run and Slack hears about the reports that touch them — about forty a week that are yours, not the four hundred that are not.
