CVE-2024-2617 in Hitachi Energy RTU500 allows authenticated users to bypass secure update and deploy unsigned firmware.

Hitachi Energy has disclosed CVE-2024-2617, a vulnerability in the RTU500 Series product's Web server component that permits authenticated and authorized users to circumvent the secure update feature. If an attacker successfully exploits this flaw, they could deploy unsigned firmware to the RTU500, potentially compromising the integrity of critical energy infrastructure. The vulnerability affects CMU Firmware versions 13.2.1–13.2.7, 13.4.1–13.4.4, and 13.5.1–13.5.3; it requires secure update to not be enabled on all CMUs of an RTU500 to be exploitable.

The vulnerability is classified under CWE-358 (Improperly Implemented Security Check for Standard Metrics). Hitachi Energy recommends immediate patching: users should update to CMU Firmware version 13.7.7 or later, or version 13.5.4 or later, and ensure the secure update feature is enabled across all CMUs. The advisory does not indicate active exploitation in the wild, but given the critical nature of energy infrastructure and the relative ease of exploitation for authenticated actors with internal access, defenders should prioritize deployment of patches and verification of secure update configuration.

What this brief leaves out

This page is the free tier: the write-up, the severity, the names. In the app the same report carries its extracted indicators, its detections (Splunk SPL already written, plus Elastic and Microsoft KQL where they apply), the actors and CVEs it names as live profiles, and the vendor research on the same campaign — the primary source the news paraphrased, cited and read directly.

It sits in a corpus of 13,854 reports from 146 sources, 616 of them written in the last seven days, and it grows through the day.

A new account starts with three days of all of it, no card, then keeps the government and CERT reporting free. Name the vendors you run and Slack hears about the reports that touch them — about forty a week that are yours, not the four hundred that are not.
