> Frontier AI models now complete over half of realistic attack scenarios faster and cheaper than skilled humans, with real-world adoption already underway.

The UK NCSC and AI Security Institute report that frontier AI models are rapidly improving at executing multi-step cyber attacks autonomously. In simulated enterprise network scenarios, the best-performing models (Claude Opus 4.6) completed 22 of 32 attack steps, compared to fewer than 2 steps just 18 months earlier, at a cost of approximately £65 per attempt. Attacks that would take a human expert 14 hours can now be partially completed in roughly 6 hours of processing time. While no public model has yet completed end-to-end attacks on complex industrial control systems, early progress suggests this gap is narrowing. Publicly available reporting confirms attackers already leverage frontier AI capabilities for espionage campaigns and malicious operations.

Defenders hold structural advantages—ability to shape their environment, collaborative threat intelligence sharing, and market incentives for strong defense—but only if they invest in security fundamentals and deploy AI-enhanced tools correctly. The article emphasizes that strong baseline security (asset inventories, access controls, secure configuration, comprehensive logging) remains essential and cannot be replaced by AI. Organizations deploying AI-enhanced security testing, alert triage, and automated response tools are seeing tangible improvements in vulnerability discovery speed and attack detection, but must treat these AI systems as part of their attack surface and design them securely. The rate of AI capability improvement means defenders should assume adversaries already have access to capable AI tools.
