NCSC warns sports sector of BEC and fraud

UK's NCSC issues guidance on cyber threats targeting sports organisations, focusing on business email compromise, digital fraud, and venue security affecting a £37bn sector.

The UK National Cyber Security Centre has published a threat report for the sports sector, highlighting how the industry's financial scale — contributing over £37 billion annually to the UK economy — makes it an attractive target for cybercriminals. The report addresses the daily cyber security challenges facing sports organisations, from local clubs to national federations.

The NCSC identifies three primary threat categories: business email compromise, digital fraud, and venue security issues. The guidance is designed to demystify these threats by providing occurrence statistics and practical mitigation measures that can stop or significantly reduce the impact of the vast majority of attacks.

The report emphasises that sports organisations of all sizes are at risk and provides actionable recommendations to help the sector improve its cyber resilience against these common attack vectors.
