FBI, Thai Police Target Pig Butchering Scam Compounds

low threat financial-services

FBI and Royal Thai Police are dismantling Southeast Asian scam compounds behind pig-butchering and romance fraud that cost Americans billions annually.

This is a law-enforcement update rather than a technical threat advisory. FBI officials detail an ongoing joint operation with the Royal Thai Police, launched in August 2025, targeting scam compounds across Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam that run 'pig butchering' investment fraud and romance scams against American victims. The operations combine human trafficking with cyber-enabled fraud: trafficked workers, often held under duress, use scripted social engineering to build trust with victims before directing them to fraudulent cryptocurrency investment platforms.

The DOJ's Scam Center Strike Force, established in November, has frozen or seized over $580 million in cryptocurrency tied to these networks. Recent joint task force operations seized more than 8,000 phones and 1,300 hard drives, and Meta separately disabled over 150,000 accounts linked to scam center networks. Thai police arrested 21 individuals in related operations. The FBI relies on IC3 victim reporting and blockchain tracing to map wallet addresses, scripts, and infrastructure shared across compounds.

While the financial and human impact is significant, the article describes a sustained multi-agency enforcement and disruption effort rather than a new or escalating technical threat. Officials acknowledge criminal networks are adaptive and may relocate or rebrand in response to pressure, meaning the underlying pig-butchering scam methodology is likely to persist despite these actions.
