> FBI and Royal Thai Police launched a joint task force targeting industrial-scale fraud operations in Southeast Asia that have cost Americans billions through romance and cryptocurrency scams.

The FBI has established a specialized task force with the Royal Thai Police to dismantle sprawling scam compounds across Southeast Asia that orchestrate sophisticated fraud schemes targeting Americans. These fortified facilities operate as industrial-scale criminal enterprises where trafficked workers are forced to execute romance scams and cryptocurrency investment fraud, particularly "pig butchering" schemes that methodically extract victims' life savings. The operations have cost Americans billions of dollars annually, with losses often devastating retirees and small-business owners seeking companionship or investment opportunities.

Since launching the task force in August 2025, investigators have seized over 8,000 phones and 1,300 hard drives from scam compounds. The Department of Justice's Scam Center Strike Force has frozen and seized over $580 million in cryptocurrency linked to these operations. The FBI is rotating special agents to Bangkok on six-month rotations to work alongside Thai authorities, combining cyber expertise, financial forensics, and blockchain analysis to trace laundered funds and dismantle the broader networks. Meta recently disabled over 150,000 accounts connected to these operations, and Thai police arrested 21 individuals.

The scam compounds blend cyber fraud, money laundering, and human trafficking, operating with the efficiency of legitimate corporations. Criminal recruiters advertise high-paying jobs abroad, then confiscate workers' passports and force them to execute scripted fraud schemes under armed guard. Deputy Assistant Director Scott Schelble warned that while enforcement victories have freed thousands of trafficking victims, criminal networks frequently relocate and adapt. He emphasized that coordinated international efforts targeting financial intermediaries, cryptocurrency exchanges, and the compounds themselves are beginning to disrupt the ecosystem sustaining these transnational fraud operations.
