ABB Automation Builder user management bypass via project file manipulation

routine vulnerability energyinfrastructure

Free public brief. The indicators, the detections with Splunk SPL already written (plus Elastic and KQL where they apply), and a Slack alert the next time this touches a vendor you run are in the app — free account, no card.

Two vulnerabilities in ABB Automation Builder up to version 2.8.0 allow attackers with file access to bypass user management controls.

ABB has disclosed two vulnerabilities affecting Automation Builder version 2.8.0 and earlier that permit attackers with access to project files to override user management protections. CVE-2025-3394 allows modification of project files to bypass user management despite encrypted password storage; CVE-2025-3395 affects projects using AC500 V2 or SM560-S devices and similarly permits overriding user management through file manipulation. Both vulnerabilities require file-level access to the Automation Builder project and are rooted in improper permission assignment for critical resources. ABB has issued workarounds: enabling "Integrity check" in project security settings mitigates CVE-2025-3394 by preventing unauthorized access or modification; enabling "Encryption" mitigates CVE-2025-3395 by preventing unauthorized project access. Version 2.8.1, scheduled for July 2025, will set "Integrity check" as the default security setting. No evidence of active exploitation in the wild is documented in this advisory.

What this brief leaves out

This page is the free tier: the write-up, the severity, the names. In the app the same report carries its extracted indicators, its detections (Splunk SPL already written, plus Elastic and Microsoft KQL where they apply), the actors and CVEs it names as live profiles, and the vendor research on the same campaign — the primary source the news paraphrased, cited and read directly.

It sits in a corpus of 13,854 reports from 146 sources, 614 of them written in the last seven days, and it grows through the day.

A new account starts with three days of all of it, no card, then keeps the government and CERT reporting free. Name the vendors you run and Slack hears about the reports that touch them — about forty a week that are yours, not the four hundred that are not.
