Bellingcat, working with Jeune Afrique, verified two drone strikes in northern Mali using geolocation, satellite imagery and weapons expert analysis, providing some of the clearest open-source evidence yet of Shahed-136 type drone use on the battlefield there. The strikes hit the villages of Inafarak on July 12 and Talahandak on July 17, 2026, both near the Algerian border, damaging commercial trucks and fuel stores and causing at least one casualty. Physical evidence, including an MD-550 engine matching reference imagery in expert-reviewed munitions databases, corroborates the drone type, though the exact variant and manufacturer origin could not be confirmed.

Experts consulted by Bellingcat assess it is likely the drones are Russian-manufactured, given the presence of the Kremlin-linked Africa Corps (successor to Wagner Group) supporting Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) against Tuareg separatist and jihadist groups in northern Mali. A Wagner/Africa Corps-affiliated Telegram channel celebrated the strikes using ethnic slurs against Tuareg/Azawad populations, referring to the drones as "Gerans," the Russian designation for the Shahed-136. This follows earlier reporting from Defence Blog and France 24 on drone wreckage in Mali, and a prior Bellingcat/Jeune Afrique investigation into Russian cluster munitions in the country, pointing to an expanding footprint of Russian-supplied weapons systems in the Sahel conflict.

Analysts note the Shahed-136's low cost, long range, and one-way attack design make it well suited for retaliatory strikes amid intensifying rebel offensives against FAMa and Africa Corps positions. However, its lack of in-flight target verification and larger warhead increase the risk of civilian harm when used near populated areas, raising concern that strike patterns and civilian-infrastructure targeting seen in Russia's Ukraine campaign may be replicated in Mali.
