Ashlar-Vellum CAD suite buffer overflow and memory corruption vulnerabilities

routine vulnerability manufacturing

Free public brief. The indicators, the detections with Splunk SPL already written (plus Elastic and KQL where they apply), and a Slack alert the next time this touches a vendor you run are in the app — free account, no card.

Four memory corruption flaws in Ashlar-Vellum CAD products allow arbitrary code execution via malformed file parsing; patch available.

CISA released an advisory on August 12, 2025 covering four memory corruption vulnerabilities affecting Ashlar-Vellum's CAD suite: Cobalt, Xenon, Argon, Lithium, and Cobalt Share. All versions prior to 12.6.1204.204 are vulnerable. The flaws stem from insufficient validation of user-supplied data when parsing proprietary file formats (.CO, .AR, .XE, .VC6), resulting in out-of-bounds writes, out-of-bounds reads, and heap-based buffer overflows. A successful attacker can disclose information or execute arbitrary code in the context of the application's process.

The vulnerabilities require local attack surface—exploitation is triggered by convincing a user to open a malicious file. Attack complexity is low, and user interaction is required. CVSS v4 base scores are 8.4 for each flaw. CISA has received no reports of in-the-wild exploitation as of publication date. The advisory was filed by researcher Michael Heinzl. The affected products are deployed in critical manufacturing infrastructure worldwide.

Ashlar-Vellum CAD Application Spawning Shell or Script Interpreter

ATT&CK T1204.002

Detects Ashlar-Vellum CAD applications (Cobalt, Xenon, Argon, Lithium) spawning command shells, script hosts or common LOLBins, which may indicate code execution after a malicious CAD file (.CO, .AR, .XE, .VC6) triggered a memory corruption flaw. Auto-generated starting point — validate and tune in your environment before deploying. IOC matches can false-positive on shared infrastructure and decay as adversary infrastructure rotates.

description: Detects Ashlar-Vellum CAD applications (Cobalt, Xenon, Argon, Lithium)

code execution after a user opened a malicious CAD file that triggered an out-of-bounds

What this brief leaves out

This page is the free tier: the write-up, the severity, the names. In the app the same report carries its extracted indicators, its detections (Splunk SPL already written, plus Elastic and Microsoft KQL where they apply), the actors and CVEs it names as live profiles, and the vendor research on the same campaign — the primary source the news paraphrased, cited and read directly.

It sits in a corpus of 13,853 reports from 146 sources, 616 of them written in the last seven days, and it grows through the day.

A new account starts with three days of all of it, no card, then keeps the government and CERT reporting free. Name the vendors you run and Slack hears about the reports that touch them — about forty a week that are yours, not the four hundred that are not.
