> A default cryptographic test key in Siemens SIMATIC IPC firmware lets attackers bypass UEFI Secure Boot; Siemens has released patched versions.

Siemens disclosed a vulnerability (CVE-2026-72895) affecting several SIMATIC Industrial PC models, caused by use of a default cryptographic key embedded in UEFI firmware. An attacker could leverage this test key to sign and boot a malicious operating system or UEFI application, effectively bypassing Secure Boot protections even when the feature is enabled. This could allow persistent, low-level compromise of affected industrial PCs that would be difficult to detect using standard OS-level security tools.

Affected products include SIMATIC IPC BX-21A (versions before 31.01.13), SIMATIC IPC RW-543A (before 1.1.4), and the IPC227G/277G/277G PRO/327G/377G family (before 28.01.15). Siemens has released updated firmware versions for all affected products and recommends updating immediately. The vulnerability was reported to CISA by Siemens ProductCERT, and there is no indication in this advisory of active exploitation in the wild.

Defenders operating these SIMATIC IPC models should prioritize firmware updates to the versions specified by Siemens. In addition to patching, CISA recommends standard ICS defense-in-depth measures: minimizing network exposure of control system devices, isolating ICS networks behind firewalls, and using secure VPNs for any necessary remote access. Given the vulnerability affects UEFI Secure Boot — a foundational trust mechanism — compromised devices could be used as a persistent foothold in critical manufacturing, energy, healthcare, transportation, financial services, and government environments where these systems are deployed worldwide.
