Microsoft September 2024 patches with four actively exploited flaws

high vulnerability

Free public brief. The indicators, the detections with Splunk SPL already written (plus Elastic and KQL where they apply), and a Slack alert the next time this touches a vendor you run are in the app — free account, no card.

Four Microsoft vulnerabilities are confirmed exploited in the wild; urgent patching required via Windows Update.

The Japanese Information-technology Promotion Agency (IPA) has published a security alert on the September 2024 Microsoft monthly security update release (September 11, 2024 Japan time). The alert identifies four vulnerabilities in Microsoft products that have confirmed evidence of active exploitation in the wild: CVE-2024-38014, CVE-2024-38217, CVE-2024-38226, and CVE-2024-43491. Microsoft has confirmed that these flaws are being actively exploited and risk further escalation.

Exploitation of these vulnerabilities could result in application crashes, arbitrary code execution, system compromise, or loss of system control to an attacker. IPA urges immediate patching through Windows Update, which typically deploys security updates automatically. Organizations managing update deployments should prioritize deployment of the September 2024 monthly security patches. Patching may require system restart. Further technical details are available from Microsoft's official monthly security update advisories.

What this brief leaves out

This page is the free tier: the write-up, the severity, the names. In the app the same report carries its extracted indicators, its detections (Splunk SPL already written, plus Elastic and Microsoft KQL where they apply), the actors and CVEs it names as live profiles, and the vendor research on the same campaign — the primary source the news paraphrased, cited and read directly.

It sits in a corpus of 13,854 reports from 146 sources, 616 of them written in the last seven days, and it grows through the day.

A new account starts with three days of all of it, no card, then keeps the government and CERT reporting free. Name the vendors you run and Slack hears about the reports that touch them — about forty a week that are yours, not the four hundred that are not.
