> CISA warns three buffer-overflow flaws in Rockwell Automation Logix controllers can be exploited to force devices into an unrecoverable fault, with vendor firmware fixes available.

CISA published an ICS advisory detailing three denial-of-service vulnerabilities affecting Rockwell Automation's CompactLogix, ControlLogix, Compact GuardLogix, and GuardLogix programmable logic controller families, widely deployed in critical manufacturing environments worldwide. All three issues stem from classic buffer overflow conditions (CWE-120) that could allow a remote or malicious user to load an invalid project or write invalid file data to the controller, driving the device into a major non-recoverable fault (MNRF) requiring manual recovery.

CVE-2025-12011 affects 5370/5570 series controllers via invalid project loading, while CVE-2025-12012 and CVE-2025-11698 affect 5380/5480/5580 series controllers and their boot firmware through invalid file data writes. The vulnerabilities span numerous product lines and firmware versions, including recovery images. Rockwell Automation, which reported the issues to CISA itself, has released updated firmware versions across all affected product lines to remediate the flaws.

CISA states no known public exploitation has been reported at this time. The agency recommends standard ICS hardening practices — isolating control system networks from business networks and the internet, using VPNs for remote access, and applying vendor patches — while emphasizing these are proactive fixes rather than a response to active attacks.
