> Chinese state media and inauthentic accounts used AI-generated content and bot networks to amplify narratives undermining US credibility over Venezuela.

The Digital Forensic Research Lab documented a coordinated Chinese information operation following the US capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Chinese state-linked social media accounts, including those exhibiting bot-like behavior consistent with the Spamouflage influence campaign, deployed AI-generated meme content designed to reshape the geopolitical narrative. State broadcaster CCTV produced an AI-generated parody music video criticizing US foreign interventions, distributed via Douyin and amplified on X through inauthentic accounts. The operation prioritized virality and digital-native formats, adopting meme aesthetics similar to those favored by US political messaging.

The campaign reinforced broader strategic narratives: positioning China as a defender of international law and sovereignty while portraying the United States as a destabilizing unilateral hegemon. Chinese state outlets dominated Weibo hashtag leaderboards, and platforms like Zhihu saw mass engagement with questions about the operation. The operation's strategic objectives included undermining US alliances by highlighting perceived hypocrisy and legal violations, and positioning China as a responsible global power providing alternatives to US-led order. Defenders should recognize this as part of ongoing Chinese efforts to erode confidence in US leadership through coordinated inauthentic behavior, particularly targeting the Global South and US allies.
